Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

If you have plenty of apples sitting in your counter, try this! Simple, old fashion homemade Apple Pie recipe from scratch. Serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream while still warm for a delicious Apple Pie ala mode. Perfect afternoon snack!

Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • FOR THE DOUGH:
  • 3 ½  cups flour (+ 1/2 cup flour)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 ½ tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cup freezing water
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • 8 cups thinly sliced peeled and cored apples (about 8 medium apples)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Egg wash: 1 egg white, lightly beaten (for brushing on crust)
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling on crust)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. For the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the 3 ½ cups flour, salt, and butter. Gradually add the freezing water and combine evenly. Sprinkle some flour (using the remaining 1/2 cup flour) on a clean counter top. Knead the flour mixture for at least 7 minutes. Cover the dough with cling film and put inside the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
  2. Make the Apple Filling: In a separate mixing bowl, combine 8 cups thinly sliced apples, 1 cup sugar, 2 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, and 1/4 tsp salt. Mix well to combine.
  3. After 20 minutes, get the dough from the refrigerator. Slice into two portion and use rolling pin to flatten the dough. Cut the 2nd half flattened dough according to your desired design for covering the top of your pie.
  4. In a round 9″ baking pan, arrange the pastry dough.
  5. Add the apple pie filling and spread evenly. Dot the top with 2 tbsp unsalted butter. Get the remaining pastry dough and arrange over the apple pie filling like a basket weave design.
  6. Brush the pastry dough with an egg-wash and sprinkle with 1 tbsp sugar.
  7. Preheat the oven to 190°C.
  8. Bake the apple pie for at least 50-60 minutes.
  9. Get the apple pie from the oven. Slice and then serve. Share and happy eating!

Cooking Notes: Traditional oven is different from other modern ovens, like Air fryer type, Electric Ovens or Convection ovens, please adjust accordingly, because each oven may vary. Modern ovens can bake much faster, so you may need to lower oven temperature to 160°C and cook it slowly but surely for about 40-60 minutes.
