How to Make Spam Musubi

HOW TO MAKE SPAM MUSUBI

You can also fry spam with shoyu and sugar and a little bit of mirin or teriyaki sauce. This spam musubi version is simple and tasty using oyster sauce and sugar. Delicious even if you can’t find any mirin or shoyu. There are plenty of varieties too, you can add scrambled eggs or sunny side up egg in between.

Nevertheless, this simple spam musubi recipe is the classic take!

HOW TO MAKE SPAM MUSUBI

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 box (500 g) sushi rice
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 cans (200g)  Spam, cut crosswise into 4 slices
  • 5 sheets Nori seaweed, cut lengthwise into three
  • 3 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp sugar

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cook sushi rice according to instruction, and let it cool when it’s done.
  2. Fry spam with equal parts shoyu and sugar (some use brown sugar with a little bit of oyster sauce with 1/2 sugar)
  3. In a pan over medium heat, heat oil. Add Spam slices in a single layer and cook, turning once or twice, for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side or until slightly crisp, add oyster sauce and sugar. Sauté and set aside.
  4. Spoon about ⅔ cup of cooked sushi rice into mold. I used the spam empty can as molder. Place cling film. Press down rice to pack tightly into about 1-inch thick. Place 1 slice of spam. Pull up cling film to release from the can. Lay nori seaweed shiny side down on a flat working surface. Put the musubi in the center.
  5. Fold one end of the seaweed over and tuck between the Spam and the sushi rice and then fold the other side of the seaweed over wrap around the rice and Spam. Moisten edge of seaweed to seal.
  6. Ready to serve. Enjoy!
