This dipping sauce is what makes Mediterranean food like Pita, Wraps, Doner, Gyros, Kebabs or Shawarma so good!

Tzatziki (tzadziki, or tsatsiki, or Zaziki) – is a Greek appetizer but also used as a sauce. Tzatziki is a cold creamy sauce made from yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, (alternatively some use vinegar or lemon juice) with herbs (like dill, or mint, or parsley, and thyme). This sauce has many recipe versions in South East Europe and is also famous around the world.

It is offered as a cold meze (appetizer), a side dish, a sauce for sandwiches like souvlaki and gyros, a calamari platter, kebab, shawarma, pita, doner among other things. 

For some of you who want to know more about this sauce. Tzatziki, which is also known as tarator or cack in Greek, is a condiment used in Middle East and Southeast Europe. It can be used as a dip, soup, or sauce. Yes..it can be any of three in different places. It is one of the staple sauces in Greek homes.

Easy Tzatziki Sauce Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 medium cucumber, peeled, seeds removed and cut into small chunks
  • ½ teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped onion
  • ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • 2 Tablespoons Mayo
  • 1 small clove garlic, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1½ teaspoons chopped fresh dill

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Chop the cucumber in chunks and sprinkle salt. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes. The salt will help to easily draw out excess water or moisture from cucumber.
  2. After 10 minutes, dice the cucumbers and  squeeze excess water. Drain thoroughly and transfer into a mixing bowl.
  3. Then add onion, yogurt, sour cream, mayo garlic, garlic powder and dill to diced cucumbers. Mix it well and combine all the ingredients.
  4. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
  5. Serve chilled and enjoy with pita, doner kebab, gyros, shawarma or any wraps.
